In less than 30 days, the next business season will open... and
runs from September to Mid December and then starts again in
the beginning of January to the end of May.

Right now your internet income / website sales may be slow...

Regardless of your situation, now is the time to plan, fine tune,
and prepare... because those that are ready will reap the rewards
of the next "selling high tide".

If you are new online, learn all you can - you can do this

If you are a seasoned internet marketer you know the drill...

1 - Over 50% of the US and Canada are online. There are over 500 million
email users worldwide. This is growing at a rate of 50 million
new users per year.

2 - Broadband/High speed internet access has almost hit
50% market penetration. This is significant
because it allows more robust, and "professional" websites -
including sales presentations. Better presentations equals
more sales AND it allows more sites to be surfed per session.

3 - It is an election year in the USs - this always affects
sales in general and the internet economies - both at "home"
and internationally.

4 - Although spam issues are on the rise, consumers are getting better
protection, and spam filtering technologies are working better.
Email marketing is not dead, it is just going through a transition.

5 - Consumer confidence in online shopping is increasing as anti fraud
systems and credit card companies in general continue to embrace
the internet and offer better protection for consumers.

6 - The high cost of gasoline. According to knowledgeable sources the
cost of gasoline will NOT decline any time soon - because demand
has exceeded production, and production is peaked out. Although
consumers will still shop in stores, better deals can be found
online - and consumers are beginning to realize this, expect
it and readily accept it. Ebay is a success for a reason... and
many top "brick and mortar" retailers with websites often
offer BETTER deals for people that order from their website.

7 - Maturing of online advertising / search engines / pay per
click search engines. People can now find what they are looking
for faster than ever before AND there is "brand name awareness"
of both the search engines themselves and indirectly what website
listings they list.

... this is just a partial list of some of the factors in our
favor as online marketers.

So does the future look bright for online businesses?
You bet.

Now go do what you got to do, prepare and get your piece of
the action today.

is promote, promote and promote.

When something isn't selling online, people automatically start
assuming things like, "Internet businesses never make any money,"
or, "My product/service just isn't in-demand." What I tell people
when they come to me with these statements is that there are
numerous reasons why their product/service might not be selling,
and that they should explore other options. For instance, have
they taken a good look at their web copy lately?

Most of the time, the people I talk to about their web businesses
are selling a good product or service that people would want to
buy. What stands in their way is often their web copy, or lack
thereof.

I often hear people say, "Nobody reads on the Internet, so my
copy just isn't that important." I want to amend that claim to
this: Many people don't read on the Internet, but those who are
looking to purchase a product or service always do.

In today's rocky economy, people aren't willing to throw money at
a product/service they know nothing about. Many online shoppers
spend hours looking for the item that is exactly what they want.
Your product/service could be exactly what they're looking for,
but with scant, uninformative copy, how are they going to know?

So it's time to make a few changes, nothing too painful. You
don't have to throw out your old copy and start from scratch.
With some minor alterations, your copy can inform, motivate and
charge prospects to take action and buy.

Here are a few changes you can make to change the way your copy
sells:

Give the Most Important Info First -- Don't force people to wade
through two pages of copy before they can discover what you're
all about. Get to the point right up front, in the headline,
subheading, and first few paragraphs. If you have too much filler
copy in the beginning and don't start getting to the point until
later, all that copy your visitors read will be lost on them. It
will have been out of context because you didn't provide them
with a context.

First Things First -- Ever heard of "Inverted Pyramid Style"
writing? It means starting with the most important sentence and
following with lesser sentences. But not too many. Keep your
paragraphs short so they don't overwhelm the reader.

Cut Words -- Web copy should use about half the word count or
less than conventional writing, so keep it short and too the
point. This isn't the great American novel. Your goal is to make
sure your audience can understand every word you say while
reading quickly. If they have to stop to get a dictionary because
you used too many cryptic words or jargon, you'll lose their
interest.

No Sub Par Subheadings -- Use only meaningful subheadings. Your
subheadings should serve as an outline for your copy, making it
easier for the reader to remember important points and gain and
accurate overview of the products or services. If your
subheadings are well-placed and meaningful, no one should have to
read your copy twice.

One Idea Per Paragraph -- Don't load your paragraphs with ideas.
Avoid confusing the reader by separating each idea into its own
paragraph. This will also help you keep paragraphs shorter.
Limiting paragraphs to one idea helps readers digest information
a little at a time, promoting comprehension and recall.

Use Bullets -- When presenting information, it is helpful to
separate the text with bullet points. Bulleted lists are easier
to read than entire paragraphs, and the differentiation shows
readers that they should pay special attention to bulleted
points. In fact, readers are known for skipping over paragraphs
and going straight for the bulleted text, so make whatever
information is in bullets essential to motivating the sale.

Highlight Keywords -- You're going to get a lot of "scanners"
visiting your site. These are people who don't read word for
word, but glance over text looking or important information.
Highlight keywords so they will know where to find this
information.

Use Hype Where Hype is Needed -- Hype is like opera. People
either love it or loathe it. So be careful where you use it. With
certain products, hype has been known to reduce credibility, but
with others, it increases excitement and motivates purchases. But
if you want to add that punch here and there in your copy, use
hype like paprika; just a pinch to tweak the flavor. An
exclamation point here, a phrase in caps there, and you've got
just enough to satisfy any palate.

"Prepare to Link!"

You can't work as a webmaster these days, without being bombarded
with exhortations from every quarter to link, link, LINK!

The reasons for this are simple - firstly, the number and quality
of links back to each site is a one of the many criteria
affecting that site's ranking in the search engines, and
secondly, good links on someone else's site mean that people
will come and visit YOUR site.

The issue of why, when, how to link is a complex one, but for
now I want to outline some very basic rules (the "Shoulds",
"Shouldn'ts and "Cans" of link building) to incorporate into your
link building strategy.



SHOULDS


1. YOU SHOULD: Download both the Alexa and Google toolbars.
These will give you an idea of the relative importance of the
sites you're considering linking to, or at least the importance
accorded to them by Alex and Google.

2. YOU SHOULD: Set yourself a target to acquire a certain
number of links per week. It doesn't matter how many, just make
sure you get them. That way, you'll establish a discipline that
will quickly lead to a healthy (and growing) number of links.


3. YOU SHOULD: Write one page which gives potential link
partners information about how get their link placed on your
site, and another which provides access to your text links and/or
banners to be placed on other people's sites. These pages should
be accessible to search engines.

4. YOU SHOULD: Place links on your website which encourage
webmasters to exchange links. For example, you could place a
link entitled "Add URL" on your navigation bar. This link should
lead to one of the two pages described in #2 above.


5. YOU SHOULD: Give priority to finding sites which have Google
PageRank of PR4 and higher. Google gives greater weight to links
with sites which rank highly on their scaling system.

We don't know how the other search engines calculate link popularity
other than the number of links, but using the Google toolbar is a
pretty safe bet - if a site scores highly with Google, it's
probably doing pretty well with other search engines too.


6. YOU SHOULD: Strongly encourage your link partners to place a
text link containing lots of relevant keywords back to your site.
If you MUST place a banner link (maybe because that's the way the
link partner likes to do it), make sure banner has some text with
keywords to accompany it. See;

This is because links which are simply graphic image sources do
not carry the same weighting with search engines as proper text
links.


SHOULDN'TS

1. YOU SHOULDN'T: Link to sites with PR0. Such sites have the
Google toolbar with "whiteout". This is bad news, in that it
indicates that the site has offended the Google spider in some
way. The webmaster has broken or infringed in some way on the
rules search engines about how sites are managed. The
infringement could be deliberate or entirely innocent - like
linking to rogue sites (known as entering "bad neighborhoods").

If you discover that a site with PR0 has linked to you, write
a polite note requesting they remove the link. Most will do so
without argument - in fact, I've discovered that the webmaster
often hasn't realized that they've been penalized, and welcome
the alert.


2. YOU SHOULDN'T: Join a link farm, EVER. These arrangements go
under the name of link exchange, link building program or banner
exchange.

Whatever the original intention of their creators were, search
engines don't like link farms. This is because they're pretty
unsophisticated set-ups built on the premise that any link is a
good link, whereas for search engines, the only good link is a
RELEVANT one.

Link farms will have your golfing website linked to one selling
rubber piping, or worse, to an adult site which is spamming all
over the place.

Steer clear of these programs. The only link building programs
that I can recommend as safe, are Arelis and Zeus, both of which
work entirely differently from the link farms, in that they are
software programs which will help in identifying relevant
websites, but you still have to go and get the link yourself.

3. YOU SHOULDN'T: Make it impossible for your visitors to access
your links pages. Some webmasters do this because they're afraid
they'll lose their surfers to the competition.

If you're that concerned, you have the wrong links on your site!

Don't put direct competitors up - link with sites which
complement your business because they are likely to be of
interest to the type of surfers which visit your site. For
example, if you you're an affiliate for classic vinyl
records, you might put up links to sites which sell disc
cleaners, hi-fi equipment or music biographies.

Make sure you set up a visible link to your link directory or
link pages, otherwise you may upset your link partners!



CANS

1. YOU CAN: Link to sites with a PR lower than PR4. So long as
a site doesn't have PR0, it's OK; chances are that the site's PR
will improve over time. If a site has a grayed-out bar, this
indicates that the site/page "is not ranked by Google", which
generally means that the site is new and has not yet been
indexed.

2. YOU CAN: Use link building tools like Arelis and Zeus to help
you weed out relevant sites that might make good linking
partners.

I've been aware of a degree of nervousness about these
programs, in that they are often lumped together with link farms,
but a close examination of the software reveals them to be little
more than data crunching tools designed to take some drudge
out of the task of link building.

It's certainly true that some users of Zeus have succeeded
in getting themselves a bad reputation by using the software to
locate and link to entirely irrelevant sites. As with any tool,
including (your own brain), you need to use your discretion
to decide what sites will work well with yours.

I've been using Zeus since April 2002, and have had no
problems, on the contrary, my best established site has acquired
300+ Google-indexed links while I've been using it, as well as a
healthy slice of extra traffic from the linking sites.

It's become much easier to distinguish yourself from any
existing bad Zeus neighborhoods by investing in the Pro version,
which among other things, allows you to customize the relevant
pages so that they aren't identifiable as Zeus pages. The free
version doesn't allow this.

GETTING STARTED

Unfortunatley, it's possible to turn the subject of
inbound and outbound linking into a science that overwhelms
rather than helps you as a webmaster.

My view on this, as with most things to do with using the
internet, is that you need to dive in and familiarize yourself
with the environment by doing what you ARE capable of.

Use the tips I've outlined above as a guide; when you have a
few links under your belt, you'll also have more confidence in
your ability to address the more complex areas of the subject,
but for now; just get out and LINK!
