-New HTML Newsletters and Why... changes are coming.

HTML? HTML? HTML?

This issue will be be switching to HTML only newsletter
sent by email to all members. This version will also
include a text message for all clients still with text
only settings for reading email.

The reason for this change is multi-fold:

1 - HTML offers more options and is easier to read.
2 - HTML has less problems with spam filters.
3 - HTML messages are more often read.
4 - HTML is considered more professional.
5 - The vast majority of email clients can handle
full HTML messages.

Here are some stats [full text about this will appear
in the next issue] from Aweber Communications CEO Tom
Kulzer. Aweber is an autoresponder/emailing service
that sends 100s of thousands of emails every day for
clients worldwide.

From this article [August 10 2005]:

Average open rate of HTML and Text/HTML newsletters
is 29.7% over the past 30 days.

An 8:00 AM EST send time generates the highest open rate of 50.6%.
Interestingly sending at 9:00 AM EST has a significantly lower open
rate of 33.7% with the worst time to send being 3-4 AM at only 19%
open rate.

Plain text messages are the most popular format of sending newsletters
with 65.9% of all newsletters sent. Mime format Text/HTML messages
follow at 23.8% and a remaining 10.2% of customers still send HTML
only messages even though it is strongly recommended to always include
a plain text version.

Subject line personalization using the date generated an average open
rate of 51.4% compared to personalization using the subscriber's first
name generating 40.9% open rate. Newsletters sent without
personalization of any type in the subject line generated average open
rates of 28.9%.

of which days to send emails to get the most response as
well as more information on emailing too.

As you can see there is a lot of concrete reasons
to switch to html/text format. Please note we send text/html
combined messages - NOT text only OR html only. This means
that if someone can not read an HTML email, they can
read the TEXT version automatically.

"Big Changes on the Net and how they will effect you,

, changes are coming on the net...

There are two things you can do - throw in the towel and leave...
OR adapt, stay and fight.

The former is what is happening all over the web - it is a natural
thing - called the "thinning of the herd". This open letter is
about recognizing that fact, understanding it, and using it to
your benefit. We will also talk about how we will be using
this understanding so to speak at Becanada.

This is about getting over the challenges and getting on with
your success pure and simple.

Why is the "herd" thinning?

Before we can understand this, we need to look at where we
came from - that is what happened when the net started.

In around 1996-1997 ...

There was email, about 100,000 websites worldwide, some search
engines [all free], and classifieds advertising. Anyone and their
dog could put up a website, full of mistakes and make a go of it.

Believe me, I talk from experience here - my first website was
full of spelling errors, had NO online order form [people had
to mail in payments], and I was regularly spamming search engines
to get high rankings. Yet with all these mistakes, and "roadblocks"
I still managed to make $1000 my first month online.

At that point in time, ANY type of advertising worked - including
classifieds, ffa sites, free search engines, banner ads, and so
much more...

Now you get an idea of why so many have come to the net with
pictures of gold in their eyes... and now you begin to understand
where we are today and in some ways why...


So lets fast forward to 2005...
..post DOT COM BUST, with the second DOT COM Boom coming...

As it stands today, internet marketers are now a victim of their
own collective success and the acceptance of the internet as
something that is here to stay instead of a "fad".

The former was caused by success - and people wanting to follow
in that success others had achieved or had a hope of achieving
combined with abuse of what made the internet so powerful in the
first place - zero or close to zero cost of doing business.

The latter... is a good thing. It means it is easier for businesses
online to sell products and services and consumers have less
resistance to purchasing - providing your website is up
to "code" and you are doing just about "everything" correct
or at least better than your competition.

Today there are 1000s of search engines, directories and pay
per click search engines, billions of websites, and over 1 billion
people online - from every country in the world - with new
countries experiencing the net like we did in 1996.

So in many ways the future looks bright.

But some things is very different now - and that is what this
open letter is really all about - how to cope with these
changes, adapt and prosper.

Before we look at what has changed, lets talk about what
NEVER changes - and that is the fundamentals of business.
These fundamentals have been the same for thousands of years
and show no sign of changing.

That is...

Provide a good quality product or service, in line with what
consumers expect to pay and treat customers right and you will
make money - providing you work hard, are honest and you get
the word out about your products and/or services repeatedly.

"Getting the word" out on the internet is simply "cloaked" to
look different - in actual fact it is the same thing merchants
have done for thousands of years - it just looks different
on the surface.

A link, a banner, a streaming video/audio, a search engine
listing, a paid ad, an RSS feed, an autoresponder, a podcast...
are all forms of communication. These are all forms of "getting
the word out". Now getting the word out, to the right people
as fast and automated as possible at the least cost - that
is the magic of the technological machine called the internet.

I bring these points up, because almost everyday people email
me asking me "where do I start? There are so many choices!".
People are overwhelmed with options. Even seasoned veterans
fall prey to the relentless beat of options of doing business
online. People are simply overloaded. The bottom line is
business itself has not changed in thousands of years.

So what do you need to do?

1 - Build a website or have it built for you.

2 - Start advertising/promotion with short and long term goals
of getting traffic using only a FEW METHODS.

3 - Update part 1, add more sites if you want and repeat part 2
while expanding your advertising methods AS YOU MASTER THEM.

4 - Do this over and over.

5 - Test and monitor your results and adapt - assume NOTHING.


That's it - draw a line in the sand, and start. 1-2-3-4-5... GO!
Do not hesitate. Just do it.

Which brings me to the real meat and bones of this open letter...
what is changing / had changed, how can you adept and prosper.

Change #1 - The internet is now far more complex than ever.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////


This means you have to take into account a learning curve
of 3-6 months minimum to understand the basics and begin
to understand things on a deep enough level to sustain and
grow your business will likely take a year.

Bottom line your website[s] must be up to par, working correctly
and you must use AND UNDERSTAND the advertising you are using
to get people to your website... as well as other deeper topics.

Of course you can purchase manuals and training materials - to
shorten this time period of learning. I still purchase training
and materials today - because even with what I know ; things
are still changing and I have to keep up to date.

What has changed?
The learning curve is longer.

How do I adept?
Accept this fact, and take things one step at a time.

How can I prosper?
Take the time to learn and learn from those that have gone
before you.

Change #2 - Transition from Free Advertising to Paid Advertising.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////


As it stands today, most traffic in one form or another starts
at one website and leads to another. This is very true of search
engines. But what is happening at search engines is "top visual
real estate" [the top 1-5 listings] are becoming or have become
paid listings because the value of that "real estate" has skyrocketed
due to competition. Sure there are still "organic" listings - which
many people still click on... but paid listings get the majority
of the traffic.

This means if you are using search engines to generate traffic
you need both paid AND "organic" listings to get traffic.

"Paid" will of course cost you money.
"Organic" will cost you time and in some cases a small amount
of money in terms of software to aid this task.

What has changed?
The availability of some forms of free advertising.

How do I adept?
Budget for paid search listings and budget time to get
good rankings [read more traffic] from organic listings.

How do I prosper?
Carefully test and monitor paid listings for effectiveness
and adjust constantly ; update organic listings and check
often.

Side note - "What Free forms of advertising still work?"

Any form of link or ad on a website getting traffic including
classifieds, ffalinks, messageboards, bulletin boards, chat
rooms... etc etc.

A joint venture with someone that has traffic/and creditability/
newsletter/clients etc etc.

A Newsletter / Article.

E-mail.
[ I know I will get yelled at on that one... ! ]

Change #3 - The legitimization of Email or "Die Spammers Die..."
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////


As it stands today, 50 to 80 % of email received every day
is spam. We get 300-600 spam emails a day at our main email
accounts [and have software that kills this before downloading].

At one point in time I had to download all this spam, and delete
by hand - several times a day. That tooks hours per day! Man was
I upset. That was 3 years ago...

I wrote software that allows me to scan and detect spam at the server
level [no download!] in about 60 seconds [this is the time I take
to double check - actual spam detection is done about 5 seconds]
and as an added bonus alert me to important emails instantly.

[Side note - we will be selling this as one time purchase software
starting in Sept 2005 for 19.95].

So... I took a problem, adapted, and added to the "fix" to make
it a better solution than the problem I started out to fix...
and folks - let me be real blunt here - that is the mental attitude
you have to take if you are going to use email in any form today...

I will not mince words - emailing marketing is tougher now
than ever. There are more steps, more technical hurdles and
it takes more time.

So when I hear of marketers throwing in the towel in terms
of email marketing ... I think three things:

1) They do not understand the battle...
2) They are whining about a few extra steps?!
3) I shake their hand mentally and thank them cause
there is more for me.

Some of you are thinking... Dave, you got an attitude problem.
And I would say yes, and damn proud of it.

Your attitude towards problem solving business challenges
will make or break your success - hands down, no questions asked,
no contest.

Got a little off topic there... so how do I use E-Mail marketing
now?

What has changed?

1 - Spam filters/software affect all email communications.
2 - Anti spammers/Blacklist sites also affect email communications.
3 - The volume of email people get [at the moment] degrades value
but the value of email that gets through spam filters is increased.
4 - Mailing practices such as newsletters, follow-ups and others
types are requiring more tactics to work better.
5 - Even regular client to client emails are affected.

So - how do I adept to all this?

First and foremost you must understand the problem[s] that affect
all email communications and how to over come them.

1 - Test large mailings using spam filtered accounts and send
tests to major isps - IE Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, Earthlink,
MSN... there are services that automate this testing too.

2 - Check for blacking listing of your mail server - desktop
or online from time to time.

3 - This goes to 1 and 2 - testing.

4 - Adjust and test times to send email. [an article about this
will be in next issues Cashlinks newsletter]. Use specialized
emailing services/software designed to be ISP/FILTER/Blacklist
friendly.

5 - Send a pre-email to clients free of ANY other text or images
including email footers before sending the main email.


Now let me be clear here - you have NO OPTION but to adapt to
changes in email. It is vital to all business operations. The extend
you use it will depend on the time you have and of course your
budget for advertising. Nothing beats the value of email done properly
in terms of generation income - short and long term.

How do I prosper?

Understand the issues affecting your email marketing. Adapt, test
and re-test until you have a firm understanding of all the factors.

TIP - Make sure you read in the Becanada News section why we
switched to HTML emails.

Right now there is a "thinning of the herd" in terms of people giving
up on email and bulk emailers being prosecuted by the law. The latter
being a good thing, because they are the ones causing most of the
problems and de-valuing email marketing in general.

As spammers are removed from the problem and email filtering systems
improve, the situation with email marketing will again prosper. Right
now patience and a little extra work is required by those that
want to succeed with email marketing.

Can pay-per-click still deliver profits for advertisers?

Until fairly recently, I used to find it real easy to
make a healthy profit from pay-per-click advertising.
In fact, I never even considered any other form of
advertising. It was so easy just to knock-up a simple ad,
add funds to my account with a popular pay-per-click search
engine, choose a bundle of popular related keywords and
then sit back and wait for the sales to come in!

It was that simple.

To determine how much I could spend on my campaign and to
calculate my maximum bid, I would use tracking software to
discover the source of my sales and then simply divide the
gross amount achieved by the number of visitors to my site.

It was scientific marketing that produced a real return
on my investment

However, over time the results gradually began to change...
More and more advertisers started to see the clear benefits
in pay-per-click advertising over offline methods. There
was more competition for those popular key word terms
resulting in higher bids to achieve the exclusive pole
position...ending in a bidding war!

The battle to reach the top became detrimental to the
advertiser. As the bids increased, these popular terms
which previously used to attract large chunks of profit
became too expensive. Instead of providing a return on
my investment, the campaign began to cost more than the
amount that was returned in sales. I tried lowering my bids
but the amount of traffic that was delivered rendered my
campaign ineffective.

This was my situation only a few weeks ago and if you are
an online advertiser who has had success in the past with
PPC then this brief story will probably sound very
familiar...

So when I released my latest ebook I was very cautious
this time with my PPC advertising. In the past I wouldn't
think twice about investing heavily in a popular ppc search
engine campaign, but this time I was determined not to
simply throw money away just to gain search engine exposure.

So, I decided to perform a comparison test between 3
different pay-per-click traffic sources with an initial
budget of $200 committed to each pay-per-click engine for
my latest ebook 'Cash From Your Camera'

The first was the most popular of the pay-per-click system
of advertising - Google Adwords

The second was another fairly popular source of PPC traffic
- Kanoodle at http://www.kanoodle.com

Finally, I tested a new kind of traffic source -
Have Traffic at http://www.havetraffic.com. This isn't a
pay-per-click search engine but it is a type of PPC
advertising. They say that their traffic achieved through
a network of related sites instead of a direct result from
a search engine.

Here are the results....

First, for the Google traffic, my average cost per click
was 45 cents for the range of different keywords I was
bidding on. I received a total of 449 visitors and 1 order.
I also received 20 sign-ups to my newsletter providing a
sign-up conversion rate of around 4.4% and ROI of 43%

Kanoodles's traffic was disappointing although much
cheaper. I actually received 1523 visitors for my $200
investment. This works out at less than 8 cents a visitor
for the same keywords. But the campaign resulted in zero
sales an only 2 sign-ups to my newsletter...not good!

The surprise package was Have Traffic

They provide traffic at a flat rate of 20 cents a visitor
so I received 1000 visitors for my investment of $200.
The traffic returned a total of 3 sales and 46 subscribers
to my newsletter. The return on my investment was a 135%
plus I received 46 leads with which to follow-up

Just one of the campaigns broke even and that one only
earned 135% ROI. I'm sure that if I optimize everything
a little better then Google and Have traffic would provide
a real profitable return on my investment. Unfortunately
it does appear that Kanoodle is a bust no matter
what I do. Its a shame. In the distant past I could count
on decent traffic from them

I guess it's possible that the results may have been
different if I had used different keywords for the campaigns

After 128 years of business, a household word, Montgomery Wards,
Inc., closed their doors forever and filed bankruptcy.

With 258 stores and 28,000 employees in 30 states, Wards fell
victim to competition from service-driven retailers like
Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Circuit City. Wards claimed a "poor
retail environment" for the failure. Interestingly, Wal-Mart and
Home Depot didn't shut down. (Editorial sarcasm).

Wards is a perfect example of a company that thought it was in
the retail business and missed the fact they're in the service
business.

Perhaps they rested on their laurels. After all, 128 years in
business is rather noteworthy in today's ever evolving economy.
And clearly, size nor name recognition saved this organization
from distinction.

The 28,000 employees will soon be looking for work. Why? Because
the organization missed the mark. They remained retailers when
the competition had evolved to a more personal, service oriented
approach. And I'm willing to bet that most of the employees are
"stunned," "surprised," "confused". They thought the old way of
doing business was just "fine".

Perhaps this can be a wake up call for every business. What
exactly does your business do? The quick answer is generally,
"we make, manufacture, service the best darn 'Gismos' in the
universe".

The focus is on the "stuff". The focus needs to be on the
outcome.

Sure you might "make, manufacture, service the best darn Gismos
in the universe" but if the end result isn't happy, satisfied
customers who enthusiastically spend more of their monëy with
you while telling friends, family and associates, you're
destined for short term success, at best.

Remember, Wards was in the "retail business". Now their
inventory is being liquidated at 40% to 50% savings.

A further wake up call might be on the horizon. If the U.S.
economy moves toward a slow down, customers are going to be
harder to find and still harder to keep. Following years of
rapid growth, stunning salës with record profits, most
organizations have felt little need to focus on customer
retention, customer satisfaction, keeping customers, customer
loyalty, customer service, customers for life or any of the
current "service" mantras.

In fact, talk to just about any executive and they'll tell you
their organization is "committed" to customer loyalty. Give them
a few more minutes and they're likely to brag about the level of
service their organization is currently providing. And just look
at the numbers-they must be doing something right.

But just wait. The companies that spent the time to build and
grow a powerful workforce with a focus on excellence and service
will be light years ahead of the game as competition increases.

In other words - "Good times can camouflage poor përformance".

So what's this mean to you and me?

First, FOCUS, Re-Focus and continue to RE-Focus. What is your
company in business to do? What role does your department play
in the process? How can each player move përformance to the next
level? Keep answering and re-answering these core questions.

Second, EVALUATE, Re-Evaluate and continue to RE-Evaluate. Take
a hard look at the service offered by your company, your
department, your team from the customers' eyes. Be on the
lookout for opportunities to take performance to the next
level.

Evaluate opportunities to enhance performance internally with
your important Trapeze Buddies - the people you count on most
often to complete a task, function or provide you with
information so you can get your job done.

And nëver assume that "no news is good news". Your customers are
talking - it just might not be to you.

Third, INNOVATE, Re-Innovate and continue RE-Innovating. Buggy
whips sold well in their day but if you're in the buggy whip
business today, you're short on customers.

Innovation is essential for continued, long-term growth. Look
for innovation opportunities in the following areas: 1.
Enhancing your core product or service; 2. Saving customers time
or money; 3. Reducing customer's headaches and hassles; 4.
Helping your customers gain a competitive advantage.

The rules of the game keep changing but one universal truth is
this: the job of every business is to attract and keep satisfied
customers. Period.

Traffic... the life blood of every online business.

The problem is, are you getting enough of it to make your
online business grow to your expectations within the time
period you have set?

In my mind you can never have enough traffic But the fact
remains, NO Traffic, NO Profits, NO Business.

Though there are many ways to generate traffic online, both
FREE and Paid, the question remains, which method or
methods are right for you and your business to get it
moving and profitable in as little time as possible?

Now, with that being said, what I'm about to share with you
IS a 'Proven' way to create an avalanche of FREE targeted
traffic to your website, without having to pay a single
penny.

This is ONE of many of the tactics the guru's online use to
get the word out 'Quickly' about there NEW product and/or
service.

But, before I move on any further, let me first explain
what "T.O.D." stands for and what it is so there won't be
any confusion through the rest of this article.

"T.O.D." stands for -- "Traffic On Demand".

What is "Traffic On Demand"?

It's simply an website and/or list owner with a large
'eMail List' of subscribers to which he/she can Blast an
email out to at any time absolutely FREE about whatever
they want as long as it's related to there target audience.

Now, your probably wondering, "Well, how's T.O.D. going to
benefit me?

Simple.

You proposition the website and/or list owner with a
JV(Joint Venture) proposal they simply can't refuse.

For those of you who don't know what a 'Joint Venture' is
it's simply a business partnership between two or more
parties that agree to share the $$Profits$$.

If you've been online for any length of time I'm sure
you've heard of 'Joint Ventures' at least somewhere online
and how people claim is how there Internet fortunes were
made.

There's good reason for there claims simply because they
already knew where to find an 'Hungry' targeted audience
waiting for what they had to offer known as "T.O.D.".

All they had to do was take the time to contact and
proposition the website and/or list owner with a JV
proposition they counldn't refuse.

And belief me when I say this, there are literally MILLIONS
of websites out there just waiting for you to hit them up
with your Product or Service so they can send it to there
lists of subscribers and collect there share of the
$$Profits$$.

And, if you already have an 'Affiliate Program' set-up for
your product or service, your half way there. All you need
to do is write a compelling JV proposal(not to long, these
people are very busy and are hit up everyday with JV
offers) and tell them... "What's in it for them?"

And, here's another quick tip... make sure you
'Personalize' the JV proposal you send, otherwise, they
won't give you the time of day and will discard your hard
work as SPAM.

Now, how can you get started - Starting Today?

The 'Search Engines' are a great place to start under the
keywords related to your product and/or service.

You can also go to 'Ezine/Newsletter Directories' and
search through there database of list owners to find
relevant JV partners.

Keep this in mind that not all the website and/or list
owners you contact will jump on your JV offer.

Don't get discouraged.

If you don't here from them within a few days or a week,
send out an follow-up email just in case your first JV
proposal didn't get through to there Inbox, otherwise, keep
on searching and keep on contacting.

You just never know what might happen.
