- Are the "old [marketing] methods" dead or are you being lied to?
- Editorial Comment.

From: David Belton , Ceo Becanada
Feb 9 2010, 1:10 pm

Dear ,

I am going to put my foot in it and in a big time way today.

Considering I have size 13 shoes ; well, may need out-patient care
by the end of this commentary.

I was recently reading on a Blog about how a client had complained
to a marketing website's owner about the copyright date on the
material purchased - it was "how to market online type material" ;
and I had purchased material from this vendor myself.

The comment was along the lines ; well it is 6 years old. It is no
good... out of date... etc etc. Referring to copyright in the PDF.

This struck me as rather odd ; when in fact I had the same thought
myself on more than one occasion when purchasing marketing materials
myself online. However the art of marketing was perfected long
before the internet ever came to be ; the internet was simply a new
medium... therefore even though I had the same thought ; I did not
DISCOUNT the value of the information on this basis.

Opps... Yes; I CONFESS!

I have had an online business for 15+ years now; and I still
purchase material to make my sites; and that of my affiliates and
clients work better to this day. You never know when you will read
something that when applied can make a difference in your business
and/or be valuable to a colleague or client.

Or better yet - a concept you did not grasp -- suddenly making sense.
Anyhow - I digress.

My point here is that the 'net has NOT really changed very much. Although
on the outside it appears that way ; really not much has changed... when
I speak of change; I refer to marketing online.

But Dave - change is everywhere !!!

There are now Blogs, And Facebook and Twitter and Craigslist?
Bing?

Are these REALLY NEW?
Or do they just have new "wrapping" / "packaging" ?

Well - Bing ... that is an easy one ; MSN Search with a different name.

Blogs?
Just another form of message boards, classifieds, even in some cases a shopping
catalog. [Google "WordPress Templates" ]

Twitter?
A cross between email marketing and website marketing with real time updates
across both mediums; to people that want to "follow news" about person/business.
Another way to look at it ; a controlled form of "chatting on demand".

Facebook?
A huge "members only" club for people you know and/or your business to connect
and communicate. Plus apps to further this purpose or to entertain.

Craigslist?
A larger version of classifieds service ; as old as the net itself.

What makes these services LOOK DIFFERENT is the packaging and of course
the marketing of these services/sites/businesses. Most of the under lying
technology that allows these services to work is the same available 10 years ago*.

People love NEW STUFF - so if it looks new, and/or works better... it must
be "new"... the latest "thing" ... you follow me?

Do not get me wrong; all the the above services LEARNED from those that came
before them ; then they tweaked it ; took it seriously ; and have stayed
on message in providing an excellent and evolving service.

Google - became a VERB.
Facebook - also now a VERB.

Because they work and work well.

BUT...

Are they REALLY different or are they PERCEIVED to be different?
As marketers online; this is really the key question.

Why?

Because when we market online or purchase products, services or
information to help us market online ; are WE looking for the "latest
and greatest thing" OR WHAT WORKS?

BTW: The same applies when we build a website or service too.

Example:
Do you know the 25% visitor loss rule per click ... ?

We live in a world where the "latest and greatest" IS THE "SOCIALLY
SMART" thing to "purchase", "do" or should be "listened to".

Think about this.

If I gave you a book on the basics of marketing written 20 years ago VS
one written in ebook form ; 1 year old -- which one would you say
has more value? Which one would you read? which one would you "BELIEVE"
to be more important?

You want the "Iphone4" or the "phone book sized"
cell phone from 20 years ago?

Well that is simple... "Iphone4" - DUH!

But...

If you are in the middle of nowhere; and the "Iphone4" has no signal but
the "20 year old cell phone" gets a signal and it is an emergency?

The point is this ; if it works IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW OLD it is.
The same is true in the art of marketing.

Google: "aida formula"

This formula forms the basis of ALL MARKETING worldwide. And I am not going
to tell you how old it is - Smile .

HINT: See the Wikipedia entry.

As marketers ; and even as consumers it is not so much as what is
"NEW AND HOT" ; but what works and works well that should be most important.

Use what works and work your plan and you will succeed.

David Belton,
Ceo Becanada

[3] Cashlinks Member "How to" Training:

"How we are going to help you get a piece of the Yahoo!/Google
Pie. - Part 1"
____________________________________________________________________

Content = Reason to Visit [and revisit] = Sales.

This is the formula of success for online businesses and websites.

Working with this formula, we wanted to give every Cashlinks
members' visitor a reason to visit and visit repeatedly.

Every time they visit your website - is a chance for you to make
a sale. More often they visit - the more chances you have.

With our new "How To Market online" search engine - people have
a VERY STRONG reason to visit.

Because new content is added weekly - people have a reason to
revisit - again and again.

Last issue we covered all the points above in great detail.
Now, we are going to move forward with phase 2.

This week we added over 80 issues of the Internet Marketing
Center Newsletter to ALL Becanada Internet Marketing websites.

These articles are by one of the top online marketers and
teachers of Internet marketing - Internet Marketing Center.

Corey has given Becanada permission to reprint these articles
at all websites.

Now - What's this about getting a "piece" of Yahoo!/Google Pie?

What would you say if a told you I just uploaded 80+ pages
of passive sales copy designed to automate selling all
products and services by the Internet Marketing center for you?

And all these pages where coded to your Internet MArketing
Center Ids?

And you do not have to do a thing - but get as many visitors
to your Cashlinks website - to make more sales?

We added special replication software to your Cashlinks website
that automatically updates all these articles - where ever
they mention IMC products - to now point at your IMC replicating
website[s] automatically...

So...

As people read and learn at your Cashlinks website, and visit
these additional replicating websites - you can now earn a
lot more money...

Not to mention , people now have a reason to visit your
Cashlinks website again and again - to learn more about
internet marketing, and of course all about the tools
and systems that can help them increase their sales online
too.

Visit your Cashlinks website now, click on "newsletters"
and check out this new section.

Keep in mind this is only part 2 - we have lots more
to add to bring the Becanada Internet Marketing
Search engine to it's full potential - not to
mention in doing so - bring your income to it's
full potential too, with more systems
like the one used with all of Internet Marketing Center's newsletters.

"POSITIONING YOUR BUSINESS for Succëss"
by Charlie Cook , marketingforsuccess.com

____________________________________________________________________

As the plane lifts off, imagine yourself reclining
comfortably in your first class seat. You're headed for San
Francisco where you'll be met by a driver and whisked to a
luxury hotel with views of the bay. The tab is being picked
up by a company looking to buy your firm, and your biggest
concern is how much cash and stock to ask for when you meet
with the president of the company and the senior officers.
Sound like a fantasy?

Actually, I was the person being whisked across country, a
few years back, to negotiate the sale of a web site I had
built. With a lot of hard work and a carefully executed
positioning I created the opp0rtunity to make more than I
thought possible from what had started as a just for fun
project.

Whether you are a builder, accountant, realtor, market
researcher, or manufacture loudspeakers or baseball bats,
the way you position your firm can determine your succëss.

- Do you want prospects to seek you out?

- Do you want people to pay you more?

- Do you want to stand head and shoulders above your
competition?

With a simple positioning strategy you can get more
attention than you imagined and bring in those high-margin
projects and the profits you want. Here's how I positioned
one of my ideas for succëss.

1. IDENTIFY A NEED
In 1999, a new search engine was appearing on the Internet
almost every week. Some were much better than others.
Knowing which search tool to use was confusing. Through my
own interest in finding better tools to navigate the web,
I'd discovered a common need.

2. EDUCATE PPROSPECTS TO DEMONTSTATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Based on four years of study of search engines and a book
I'd written previously on marketing to the search engines,
I'd become an expert on how they did and didn't work. To
help my own online research and to help others, I built a
web site that provided a directory of search engines and
reviewed their usefulness and functionality.

- What are your areas of expertise?

The objective of my site was simple. At a time when most
people were just discovering the web, I wanted to help them
find the best possible search tools for their particular
task. My mission was to educate people about how to find
what they were looking for online. The site primarily
focused on the growing number of reviews I authored. Instead
of leading with information about my credentials, I used the
content on the site to demonstrate my knowledge.

- What can you do to educate your prospects?

- How can you demonstrate your expertise?

3. IDENTIFY AND REACH YOUR TARGET MARKET
Now I needed a way to get people to the site. While my
target market was almost infinite - anyone searching the
Internet - my advertising budget was zero. (Remember I
was doing this as a back pocket project while maintaining
my marketing consulting practice.) How could I attract
attention and get people to come back to the web site
again and again?

I identified online editors and reference librarians as
identifiable, approachable groups with a high level of
interest and influence. I started an ezine directing readers
to current search engine reviews and updates on the site and
published approximately once a month.

- What is your stay-in-touch strategy?

RESULTS
After just three issues of my ezine reporters started
calling me for radio interviews and magazine articles.
I received an offër to buy the web site with the price
tied to the number of monthly visitors and page views.
Three months later I had grown traffic to the site from
thirty thousand to three hundred thousand page views per
month and closed the deal.

POSITIONING YOUR COMPANY
To position your product or service for succëss:

A. Identify a Common Need

B. Identify a Market

C. Demonstrate Your Expertise to that Market

D. Continue to Stay in Touch

If you've been in business for three years or more you've
accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge. The more
you share your ideas, the more people will view you as an
expert and seek you out. Give your prospects examples of
your expertise and they will think of you when they need
your products or services.

You can use an ezine, your web site, a book, workshops or
public speaking to demonstrate your knowledge and put your
firm ahead of the competition. Using the strategy outlined
above and a little effort you can position your business for
succëss and put yourself in front.

[5] Guest Article #2:

"How to Write Effective Sales Copy for the Web"
by Herman Drost, iSiteBuild.com

____________________________________________________________________

When surfing the web, you often find websites with large or
flashing graphics to grab your attention. While this may
"wow" you initially, it does not pull the visitor through
the site to get the order and make a sale. This should be
the ultimate purpose of your site if you are trying to sell
something.

On the other hand writing effective sales copy will
generate a much more favorable response, whether it is long
copy or short copy.

16 steps on how to write effective sales copy:

1. Research keywords - use wordtracker or the overture
suggestion tool to find keywords related to your product.
Weave them throughout your web site sales copy, including
your meta tags. Try to find alternative keywords to your
main ones. I chose the keyword phrase "teeth whitening" as
an example.

Here are some of the alternatives to "teeth whitening" to
give you some idea:

teeth whitening, laser teeth whitening, zoom teeth whitening,
los angeles teeth whitening, teeth whitening gel, whitening
teeth, teeth whitening california, teeth whitening kits, new
york teeth, teeth whitening products

2. Create a slogan - capture your visitors’ attention by
creating a slogan that stresses the benefits (not the
features) of your product. For example for the phrase
"teeth whitening" use a slogan such as:

"Get heads to turn when you open your mouth to smile?"

3. Write a powerful headline - the headline should appeal
to the benefits of the product not the features. Try to put
yourself in the customers’ shoes so you are seeing the
product from their viewpoint view (not yours). ie

"New Teeth Whitening Gel Becomes Household Necessity for
Kids"

4. Appeal to visitors’ emotions - writing sales copy for
the web is more difficult because you are not physically
interacting with the person. Therefore you need to convey
some emotion in the words that you use so they will
continue reading. In the above headline example, I have
emphasized that this product is a necessity for kids...that
you can't do without it. You will feel some loss if you
don't buy it now.

5. Make it personal - write as if you are sitting next to
the person trying to persuade him to buy the product. Use
words such as "you". ( ie "people will notice you when you
smile") or "your" instead of "we" or "our" which sounds
very impersonal.

6. Don't use capital letters - using capital letters in
your sales copy is like yelling at them to buy. Instead,
use different colored text or bold text to emphasize the
points you are trying to make.

7. Write an introductory paragraph - this should support
your headline and outline the clear purpose of your site
and include your keywords. Often a personal story helps to
personalize the product.

"Bob's teeth whitening gel makes you want to smile
continuously because you immediately stand out from the
crowd with your fresh, clean, white smile. You can take
this teeth whitening kit with you anywhere you go, whether
it's to the office, beach, or restaurant..."

Here I have included the keyword phrases: teeth whitening,
teeth whitening gel, teeth whitening kit.

I have also stressed the benefits of the product (what's in
it for me) and given a clear purpose of what the site is
all about.

8. Create sub headlines - these should continue to support
the introductory paragraph. Use bullet points and plenty of
white space so your visitor can read your sales copy with
ease.

9. Use testimonies - obtain testimonies from satisfied
customers and include them throughout your web copy. These
are powerful motivators because it is someone else (not
you) testifying to the use of your product ie

"I am so relieved that I don't have to chase my kids into
the bathroom anymore to brush their teeth. My kids now run
to the bathroom to use the teeth whitening gel and are
smiling much more than before. They now have a more
positive attitude and have made many more friends."
Sandra Smith
ssmith@msn.com

10. Include graphics - graphics should only be used to
support the content of your web copy. In this example, you
could include before and after photos. The first photo
could show someone alone smiling and showing their yellow
teeth. The second photo could show a smile with shiny white
teeth standing together with their friends (to emphasize
why this person became popular).

11. Get the order - include several ways for your visitor
to take action and order your product. Include order
buttons throughout the sales copy (sometimes visitors have
read enough and want to order immediately without wanting
to read through the whole page). Use several payment
methods (ie credit card or paypal) to capture the largest
number of paying customers.

12. Include bonuses - most people love to receive something
extra on top of what they are getting already. This
increases the perceived value of your product. Add a few
bonuses to the end of your sales copy. This may consist of
e-books, offering extra help after the sale, or having
access to special information only available to those that
purchase your product. Create a password protected
directory on your site where only people that have
purchased your product, have access to this special
information.

13. Create a sense of urgency - it's very easy for visitors
to procrastinate, thinking they will come back later...they
rarely do, especially on the Net. Most will purchase on
impulse. You could right something like:

"Get your order now as supplies are very limited" or

"These bonuses are available for only a limited time"

Be truthful in what you say. You don't want a visitor to
return to your site and still see the same number of
products listed from when they last visited your site.
There may be a script you can use on your website that
automatically shows the decreasing number of products or
time available to receive the bonuses.

14. Provide a solid guarantee - guarantees help reduce the
anxiety the customer may have ordering from you. ie "30 Day
Money Back Guarantee". The longer your guarantee, the fewer
returns you will receive. You will receive fewer returns
for a one-year guarantee than you will for a 30-day
guarantee. This is because they won't feel rushed to return
to review your product in order to return it.

15. Provide contact information - this allows visitors to
ask questions which you may not have clearly addressed in
your sales copy. You may also want to include a personal
photo of yourself or an "about us" page. This shows
customers you are not trying to hide yourself behind your
site but want to win their trust.

16. Check spelling, grammar and formatting - run your sales
copy through a spell checker like MS Word. Typos in your
sales copy project an air of unprofessionalism, sending
your visitors away. Keep your sentences short and to the
point. Most Internet users will scan your sales copy for
headlines, sub headlines, bulleted, bold, or colored text.
Proofread your sales copy several times or have someone
else read through it.

By following the formula outlined above, you can now create
sales copy that enables visitors to stick to your site and
purchase your products instead of trying to "wow" them with
flashy graphics that may take forever to download.
