Are You Making These Mistakes In Your Business?

You’ve probably heard the statistic that 95% of small
businesses fail in the first five years. That’s not a very
encouraging number! Although being part of the 5% that
succeed is not easy, it’s definitely possible. What it
takes is a lot of common sense, some marketing and sales
skills and the ability to learn from the mistakes of others.

To get you started on the road to success, here are three
of the biggest mistakes small businesses make and some tips
to help you avoid them:


Mistake #1: Having a Poorly Defined Sales Process


The key to making money with any business is to stay
focused on how you can sell, sell more and sell more
often. Unfortunately most businesses don’t consider all of
the ways they can make money from customers and end up
losing potential revenues.

There are three ways you can make money from your site:


1. Get More New Customers

This is the sales activity that most small businesses
spend 90% of their efforts on. Although it’s an important
element of your sales process, it’s only one of three
ways you can make money. Don’t neglect the other two
because you’re focused on only attracting new customers.

2. Make More Money From Each Transaction

Upselling is the process of increasing the value of a customer’s order.
Offering additional products and services at the point of
purchase is an effective way to increase the value of the
transaction.

3. Sell More Often To Existing Customers

Existing customers are the least expensive customers to sell to.
Why? Because they’ve already purchased from you once so
they trust you, you already know what they’re interested in
and you know how to reach them. Use these facts to your
advantage by following up with existing customers on a
regular basis and offering them more products and services.
This process is known as backend sales and is one of the
most overlooked revenue sources by small businesses.

A well-defined sales process will include all three of
these. If you’re missing any of them you need to rethink
your strategy from the beginning. Start with your first
contact with a customer and walk through step-by-step how
you’ll take them from never having heard of you to being a
lifelong customer.


Mistake #2: Not Learning What Makes a Website Sell

If you’ve been online longer than five minutes you know
that the build it and they will come mentality doesn’t
work. If you want your business to succeed you need to
learn how to make a website that sells.

Some of the best things you can do are:


- Build Trust

Providing testimonials, free trials, money
back guarantees and a Privacy Policy will all help your
customers trust you. The more confidence people have in you
and your ability to deliver what you say you will, the more
likely they’ll be to take the action you want.

- Keep Your Product Offers Relevant

No matter how tempted you may be to promote an unrelated product or service
because it pays a high commission, DON'T! There is an old
saying that you should keep in mind at all times, "stick to
your knitting". In other words, stick with what you've been
doing.

- Get An Email Address For As Many Visitors As Possible

This can be when they order, sign up for your newsletter,
request an information package, enter a contest, request a
special report, sign up for a trial/demo, or whatever
action makes sense for your business. Having this address
allows you to follow up with them and turn them from
prospects to customers.

- Make The Perceived Value Extremely High

The higher theperceived value of your offering, the fewer objections you
will receive. To add value, consider additional products
and services you can offer to purchasers. This can be a
special report, an ebook or even some of your time. Just
make sure that whatever you offer it's not readily
available for free on another site. Otherwise this
technique will have the opposite effect and make your offer
look less valuable.


Mistake #3: Not Treating it Like a Business

Too many small business owners fall into bad habits early
on and end up treating their business more like a hobby
than a business.

Here are a few things you can do to treat your business
like a business:

- Stick To A Schedule

Just like you would with a regular
job, develop a work schedule for your small business and
stick to it. This will keep you focused and you’ll be more
productive.

- Get Help When You Need It

You can’t be an expert at all things.
If you don’t know how to build websites, write copy
or do the accounting, find someone who does. Doing so will
let you focus on what you do well instead of wasting your
time and leaving you frustrated.

- Work Hard At It - That’s right, good old-fashioned elbow
grease will always get you further then searching for the
secret to success.

Wouldn't you like to use your web site to convert more
prospects to paying clients? Imagine your prospect, Tom is
online looking for a particular product or service. He has
found your web site either through a search engine or a link
from an ad. Tom clicks through your web pages. Your product
or service meets his needs perfectly, but he clicks away.
What can you do to turn more site visitors like Tom into
customers?

Like any sensible person, Tom is cautious about making a
purchase or a contact on the Internet. There are thousands
of honest and helpful service providers online but unlike
local shopkeepers Tom isn't familiar with any of them.

Your challenge is use your web site to engage your prospect
so he/she discovers what an expert you are and knows and
trusts you. People buy from people they know and trust. If
you want to connect with prospects, you need to personalize
your online marketing. Here's how:


1. Introduce Yourself

You want people to remember you, your products and services.
Add a personal introductory note to your homepage or your
site and include a picture of yourself so people have a face
to associate with your name.


2. Include Personal Testimonials

Get past clients to make your selling points for you. Use
personalized testimonials from clients that refer to you and
your firm by name and describe the incredible results you
achieved for them.

3. Demonstrate Your Expertise

Use case studies on your web site and in your newsletter to
explain how you help people. With permission, refer to the
clients involved, their situation and how you helped them.


4. Engage Site Visitors with Questions

Find out what your prospects are looking for. When people
leave a page, prompt them with a question so that you can
find out what they were looking for and what they want to
achieve.


5. Include Pictures of People in Your Firm

People love to look at pictures. Include photos of yourself
and your employees at play and at work. If you have a
dedicated contact page, include thumbnail photos of your
staff next to their contact information.


6. Add Audio or Video Clips to Your Site

When people hear your voice or see you in action you become
that much more real and credible to them. This is one reason
public speaking works so well to generate new business. Add
an audio clip of yourself discussing the problems you solve.
If you do public speaking, include a clip from one of your
talks.


7. Include Full Contact Information

When you are looking through a web site and contact
information is buried, or only an email address is provided,
it makes you question the credibility of the firm. While the
web itself is intangible, you want your prospects to know
they are buying from real people who work at a real company.
Include your firm's name, phone number and mailing address
on every page of your web site.


8. Answer Email Inquires

People half expect that they won't get a response when they
send an email to a business they don't know. Pleasantly
surprise them by thanking them for their inquiries and
answering their questions promptly. They'll appreciate you
and be much more likely to buy from you.


9. Follow Up with a Phone Call

Prospects are amazed and delighted when, minutes after
leaving your web site, their phone rings and a live person
calls to follow up on the question they just asked by email.
Use their inquiry to start a conversation and discover what
their needs are and how you can help them.

Whether your goal is a hundred thousand or a hundred million
dollars in revenue for the year, your business is built one
prospect and one client at a time. Use your web site to help
each of your prospects get to know you and your business
personally and you'll build both trust and sales.

7 Essential Web Site Maintenance Strategies

Maintenance of your web site is an absolute necessity if
you want to keep it from becoming stagnant and losing
visitors. It can be compared to a garden that is not
weeded, it soon disappears from site as a result of the
weeds blotting out the sunlight. Maintaining your web site
means continuously updating it with fresh content, keeping
it free from errors (ie broken links, sloppy code) to
maintaining a high position in the search engines.

Let's look at the 7 essential strategies for web site
maintenance:

1. Check for broken links - broken links will annoy
visitors making them click elsewhere off your site, thus
losing a potential customer. Businesses that once linked to
your site, may have closed down, thus causing broken links
to appear. Check for broken links on your site at least
once a month.

2. Write correct and clean html code - html errors can
negatively affect your search engine rankings. For example,
if your webmaster places the meta tags or header (H1) tags
in the improper order on your page your rankings will
suffer.

Here's an example:

Notice that the P tag above is missing a closing bracket.
The code should really be written like this:

this is your highly targeted keyword phrase your web
master wrote..

The search engines will read the keyword-rich text as
attribute of the paragraph tag and ignore it. Since search
engines spider text that is highly visible at the top of
your web page, you will have lost the opportunity to gain
high search engine rankings.

Run all your pages through
http://validator.w3.org/detailed.html to clean up any html
errors.

3. Add fresh content - search engines will more regularly
spider your site if the content on your web pages is
continually updated or changed. One excellent method is to
add a new article to your site every week or two.

4. Obtain incoming links - search engines use linking to
create a web of linked sites. The more sites that link to
yours help determine the popularity of your site. Sites
with only a few links don't usually do well in the search
engines. Preferably obtain links from related sites which
already rank well or receive a large number of visitors.
Finding links should be one of your ongoing strategies to
maintain and increase your rankings.

5. Monitor web site rankings - the number and type of
keywords used to search for information on your site can
change dramatically. Without constantly monitoring your web
site rankings, you may wonder why your sales have dropped.
One must stay up to date with search engine changes. Adjust
your site accordingly then resubmit it to the search engines
if needed.

Use Marketleap.com (http://www.marketleap.com) to find your
site's ranking.

6. Analyze web copy - you may be getting a lot of
hits/visitors to your site but no one is buying. Your web
copy could be at fault. Try rewriting it by placing
yourself in your customer's shoes. Focus primarily on the
benefits of your product. Sometimes changing one or two
lines can increase the percentage of sales from your site.

7. Track web site statistics - from the site statistics
provided by your web host, you can monitor the amount of
visits to each page, where they came from and what keywords
they used to find your web site. You may then need to
optimize other pages targeting alternative keywords to
increase the number of visitors arriving at your site.

Conclusion: Create a web site maintenance plan that will
ensure your web site is performing at its optimum level.
This is essential if you wish to maintain or increase sales
and stay ahead of your competition.
