If you're going to have a website, you have to have content.
Content is a word with a broad meaning, encompassing everything
you publish on your website. Sounds pretty important, doesn't it?
It is more than important; it is vital. And yet, content has
found itself pushed to the back of the line behind technology and
design.

In print publishing there is a definite hierarchy, where content
reigns at the top. For instance, if one is to publish a book, the
content of the book definitely comes before the cover design. But
in the online world, content comes last, after the design and
technology that make a website. Where design and technology once
served the content, the content has become an afterthought to
accompany design and technology.

Because technology changes so rapidly, we have to pay continual
attention to keeping current on new trends. Perhaps as a result,
it is easy to lose track of the importance of content. So on the
web, technology sits in the #1 seat of importance.

Next comes design. We're so busy worrying that visitors will not
like the design of our site that we put too many eggs in that
basket. So many people have attractive, professionally designed
sites, and this does help draw visitors to the content. But if
the content of the site isn't what visitors looking for, the
best-designed site in the world isn't going to keep them there
very long.

Last on most peoples' priority lists is the content. The message
and content has become inconsequential, but only to the person(s)
who designed and implemented the site. To visitors, content is
still all-important, which is why we are starting to see a shift
in the role of content on the Internet.

Where before the message was considered an afterthought, created
after the technology and design, it has started to take front
seat again. People are beginning to understand that the process
of communication becomes warped when the message and content of
the site are ignored. Because, when you think about it, the whole
purpose of the technology and design is to accompany the content,
not overshadow it.

Good content is crucial to any web site's marketing, search
engine results, ROI, credibility, and usability. Current studies
show that site visitors base the credibility of websites on
content: information focus, information usefulness, information
accuracy, information bias, writing tone, information clarity and
readability.

So how do you make the switch from focusing on technology and
design to making content your first priority? For an expert

The point is, this site provides nothing but exceptional content.
The design is minimal. The technology is minimal. Everything is
minimal except the content, which is unique and innovative. But
that's all Alex (the girl) needed to make her site a success.

Creating useful and engaging content must be factored into the
whole web development process. Your visitors don't just want to
come to your site and look at things; they want to research,
shop, communicate and interact. They want control, security,
activity, and an enjoyable experience.

So when you create the content for your website, think of what
will make visitors want to explore your site, not just give it a
quick glance. Offer content that will make them come back again
and again, such as articles, tips, news, forums, recipes,
contests, giveaways, advice, special offers and discounts, etc.

Know your target demographic. Know what they want to see, so you
can give it to them. Your content is only as powerful as you make
it, so give it some real thought and make it great.

Don't put all your eggs into one basket by only employing one
marketing strategy. You could see evidence of this during the
latest Google update in which many commercial web sites which
once had top rankings, dropped out of existence, thus instantly
losing sales.

By creating more than one strategy to market your web site, you
can soon see which one works the best by attracting the most
visitors.

Market with consistency

Set up a clear daily, weekly, monthly and yearly marketing plan
for your web site and stick to it. It is the lifeblood of your
business.

Test marketing

Continually test all your web site marketing strategies to see
which one works the best. Eliminate those that are not
profitable.

12 successful marketing strategies:

Search engine optimization

Here are the locations where you should include your most
important keywords or keyword phrases:

1. Meta tags (invisible)
Title tag
Description tag
Keyword tag
Alt tag

2. Page content (visible)
Weave your best keywords throughout the content of your pages.
Focus on the first 250 words on your page and only use one to
three keyword phrases per page of content. Include keywords in
your H1 tag (main title) and H2, H3 tags (subheadings) as well as
the hyperlinks in your site or and in outgoing links.

Search engines and directories

3. Google is currently the main search engine to get listed in. If
you get listed there, you will also get listed in AOL, Netscape,
and Yahoo and it's still free. This may change in the near future
as the competition heats up. Other free listings also include
directories such as ODP. Do a search on Google to seek out your
niche directories ie for sunglasses, look for sunglass
directories.

4. Pay per click (PPC) search engines - if you wish to generate
traffic to your web site immediately, set up a Google Adwords or
Overture campaign.

Email Marketing

5. Create a newsletter - most folks don't buy from you
immediately but need to be contacted several times to put them in
the buying mood. Place a subscription box on every page of your
web site. Send out your newsletter every two weeks to keep in
touch with your subscribers. Be sure to include original content
(not rehashed content) along with new products you wish to
introduce to them.

6. Email Course or tutorial - set up an autoresponder that will
deliver quality information over a period of seven days. This
means you have multiple chances of contacting your visitor and
promote your product or service at the same time.

7. Ezine Ads - create an ad for your product and find ezines that
cater to your target market. Write several ads and track them
until you find one that pulls well.

8. Signature file - include this all your online and offline
correspondence. Set up your email client so that it does this
automatically each time you send out an email. Include your name,
who you are, what your business is about, a way to subscribe to
your newsletter, your web site address and your email.

Link strategies

9. Write articles - ezine publishers are always looking for
original content. You can include a link back to your web site in
your signature file. If several ezine publishers (that may have
thousands of subscribers) publish your article, you can get
hundreds of links pointing back to your web site.

10. Reciprocal linking - get links from other sites that
compliment yours. ie if you just offer web design and someone
else offers search engine optimization you could exchange links
with each other, thus adding to the quality of each of your
sites.

11. Forums - offer your help to other forum participants then
leave a link back to your site in your signature file. Popular
forums are spidered regularly by the search engines, thus giving
your site a link boost.

12. Offline marketing

Not all your customers are online. Market offline by including
your web site information on all stationary ie letterhead, and
business cards. Place ads in newspapers, trade publications, send
out postcards, fliers and get involved in local organizations
such as the Chamber of Commerce. You can even set up your own
local club or be a guest speaker for others.

Continuously evaluate, test and refine your web site marketing
strategies so that you can apply them to any product. These
are the keys to building a successful online business.

With all of the push these days to publish an E-Zine as an online
marketer, deciding whether to accept articles and paid
advertising is becoming nothing more than a quick second thought.
As E-Zines are increasingly turning into mere tools to generating
sales, people are turning more to pre-written content. Are E-
Zines loosing their aire of freshness as an outlet for true
discussion?

I personally subscribe to numerous E-Zines just to see what
others are writing about. Most simply circulate the same articles
written by a chosen few without writing any original content
themselves. Coming up with clean fresh ideas truly takes work,
but don't you owe it to your subscribers?

Times are busy and life is rushing by. People simply do not have
the time to sit and read every article, commentary, or
advertisement that passes their eyes. As the commercial
marketplace becomes increasingly saturated with hype after hype,
people are developing a keen sense about worthwhile

I like to think of my weekly E-Zine issue as a get together with
your closest friends over coffee, wine, a beer, or whatever they
wish to entertain. Would you repeat the identical conversation
week after week?

When just starting out with your E-Zine, your relationship with
your subscribers is analogous to a first date. It is the same for
authors who publish in other E-Zines or for inclusion of outside
ads in your publication. Subscribers just don't know anything
about you.

Why not build a relationship with your subscribers? They came to
you wanting information. Don't simply give them "cut and paste".
Give them you. Add freshness. Add your insight. Your humor. Your
perspective. If you honestly talk to them they will listen. Your
friends would. Wouldn't they?

I don't pretend for one minute that building this relationship
will be easy, only fruitful. There are a few guidelines that will
maximize the strength of our subcriber relationship.

(1) Be honest and let it come across in your writing sent to
your subscribers.

(2) Send your online publication on a periodic basis at the
same time and on the same day. This is the begining of trust.
People want to know when to expect receiving correspondence
from you.

(3) Give weekly updates as to what they can expect in the
future issues. No surprises builds trust. Moreover if you
focus on content and write captivating articles your readers
will sit in anticipation of the next discussion. Tell them
that the list is tentative to leave yourself a bit of
flexibility.

(4) Refrain from advertisements or sales copy when building
your list.

After you take time to put yourself into your E-Zine, then decide
if you want to let anyone else in. Don't be tempted by the
quickness of using someone else's content and profits from paid
advertising. Develop first a high content electronic publication.
Self satisfaction, praise, and the esteem of others will result.
