Email is your lifeline to your clients and long term sales
and repeat sales. It makes up the bulk of all purchases and
profits... therefore protecting it and ensuring your email[s]
get through are paramount to your online success now and into
the future.

This issue of the Becanada Free Marketing Newsletter is devoted
to the reasoning behind email marketing and various "how tos"
to add this marketing function to your business.

But... there is a darker side of email you must be aware of
to ensure your emails get to the recipients. I am not talking
about just autoresponders, follow up emails, trial offers
and the like - I am talking about ANY email communication
between you and a potential or current client.

Back in the days when I started my internet business there
was no problem reaching anyone online. In fact it is this
very "fact" that causes legitimate emailers and basic communications
between clients and businesses so much headache... and if
your business is in the red - heartache too.

This article is designed to give you a heads up so you know
where the problems are / can arise and how to go about
dealing with them. I will not mince words here this is a huge
topic with all kinds problems and solutions.

In emailing marketing here are the "technical"
problems you have to deal with:


1 - Email filtering based on server / isp / network being black
listed.

2 - Email filtering based on content of an email - keywords, phrases,
images, number of links, domain names and so on...

3 - Email filtering at the client level using client controlled
filters.

4 - Email filtering by the ISP of content without the clients'
knowledge.

5 - Email sending thresholds based on amount of emails sent
per hour / day.

6 - Email sending thresholds based on the amount of bad emails
sent to an isp.

7 - Server / Hosting setup errors that stop some mail from
being accepted at some isps.

8 - Sender preferences for receiving text, or html messages.


These are technical issues that really have little to do with
your marketing message, subject line, or sender per say in
getting a client to open and read an email from you.

We will deal with these in a moment... but first let's talk
about technical issues.

Every issue above has to deal with blocking spam - unwanted mail.
The problem is many filters go WAY WAY too far and block legit
emails.

Compound that with the fact you can send legitimate emails
and end up getting blacking listed - either temporarily or
on a permanent basis. For the former , your mail may be blocked
for 24-72 hours ; the latter - months. Plus unless you
proactively check to see if you are on spam lists / blocked
lists - you will never know.

There are several simple ways to fight this ; and this is
what I will focus on. Although I have the technical side
too ; this would beyond the scope of this article.

So - how do we fight it...


1 - Decide which email communications are absolutely vital
and isolate this email address / hosting account from
all other email marketing.

At our company we have two completely separate servers /
hosting accounts on two different networks for just sales
and client support.

Another option is to setup a domain name on a hosting
account just for these vital communications. DO NOT
use a Yahoo or Hotmail account - this looks unprofessional.


2 - Isolate your email marketing - newsletters, client emailings
and follow ups. You may have to get a number of servers
to do this correctly and most importantly ensure your
email gets through. A good server costs $100-$200 per month.
A single sale can pay for the server.


3 - For "bulk" level emailing and follow ups , control the
rate at which emails are sent. Instead of sending 4000 emails
all in one hour, send 500 per hour over 2 days.


4 - When it comes to emailing follow ups - regardless of
the type - client, newsletter, trials etc etc, have a separate
sub domain for each link a person can click on in these emails.

IE:
demo.mysite.com
trials.mysite.com
newsletter1.mysite.com

I know this involves more work - but it is worth it. Every link
should have it's own link on the sub domain including all
third party links.


5 - For all communications make sure you have valid REPLY-TO
email address AND a valid "Return-path:" email.


6 - For direct communications make sure you have a hidden or
special word or phrase if you are using spam filters so
your own spam filters will recognize this and not compound
problems.


7 - If you are using your own mailing servers / dedicated server
you can REGISTER it with major ISPS such as AOL, Earthlink
and CS plus others to ensure your mail is at least not
filtered and/or if there is a spam issue ; it is sent
to you.

8 - Register your domain / server with a white listing service.
This service is like have your company "bonded" in terms
it is not a spam source.


The eight steps above will fix almost all "technical" issues
dealing with email marketing. Remember - testing is key.

There are websites online that specialize in just testing
the major isps to see if they will accept your emails.

Now, let's deal with some "how do I get the client to open
and read my email" issues.

Assuming your email makes to the clients inbox OR spam/bulk
folder [yikes!] ... how do we get them to open it.

Before we discuss this you must understand there are different
types of communications; such as:

1 - Support.
2 - Sales Follow up - Direct.
3 - Automated Sales Follow ups / Autoresponders.
4 - Actual Product / Service emails with download / reg codes.
5 - Newsletters.
6 - Personal Communications.
7 - Sales / Service Quotes.
8 - Promo Emails.

Every email type here can be handled in a number of ways.

Any direct communications - ie support, quotes etc - should have
in the subject line "Reply from Support" for example or in
the case of a "quote" ... "Your Quote" with the REMAINDER
of the subject line following this AND of course the entire
email quoted each time.

Also ; your "name" in the email and even the email address
itself should match the type / content of the email.

Remember - subject lines get attention, creditability OPENS
EMAILS and make sales.

Look legitimate!

Newsletters of any type should look very professional.
This includes CURRENT client follow ups too - your creditability
has been established with a sale ; so increase your
credit with your clients.

Send your newsletter in HTML ; go light on images here.
Remember most of the world still uses dial up.

Keep in mind an HTML email is somewhat different from
an html page. TEST it.

Your best option is to send newsletters in what is called
a mixed format - TEXT and HTML. IF the client only accepts
text then the text will show ; otherwise the full html will
appear. All major companies send emails this way.

In addition to sending the newsletter ; follow up 7 days later
with a VERY SHORT, text only notice. This will ensure the
maximum number of people get your email.

Promo emails are a little different...

If you are sending emails to a list for example; lets say
a list of people that have downloaded a trial and are
not yet clients you should send your emails in plain text.

Bottom line here... a promo email that looks like a promo
email gets discarded, and an HTML email with all kinds
of glossy images is a dead giveaway.

The purpose of a promo email is to get their attention,
get them to a website [and/or reply to you] for direct
conversation - IT IS NOT to make a sale.

Some schools of thought say to send nice full html
emails for selling products / services. Sometimes this
works - it depends on your audience, your level of creditability
and the products/services you are selling.

Best bet is to mix up a little and send plain text one
week and rich/full html the next.

The most important issue - personalization. The most
favorite word for everyone on earth is THEIR NAME.
Every email you send should reflect this in a respectable
way. In the subject line and/or in the content of the
email.

I hope this brief article has given you the starting point
you need to win the battle with email marketing
and making your business a success online.

You should look at the art of "subject lines", "filtering"
and "content" as well to get a better handle on this
very vital part of your business plus of course "ad copy",
"sales copy" and so on...

Remember - every communication with a person is a potential
situation where you can increase or decrease your creditability
and possibly make a sale now and/or into the future.

Treat all your email communications that seriously and
your success online will only be a matter of time and effort.

The ads become almost worthless.

provides for you.

By all means, test their ads to see if they work for
you. But at the same time, be sure to write ads of your
own that are in your own voice. This is the only way to
stand out from the crowd when promoting an over-
promoted website.

People get excited. It's a natural thing to get excited
about your new business. In fact, it's a good thing.

But don't forget in that excitement that your
prospective customer only cares about one thing.

What's In It For Me

Your customer needs to solve a problem. So, when you
write your shiny new ad, FOCUS all of the ad's
attention on one problem.

HOT TIP: If you make your ads about saving time, making
money or saving money you will do well. These are
universal needs.

This applies mainly to programs like SFI, where you
have lots of products to promote and you can promote
the business too.

The best way to go here is often to pick one product
and promote that product alone. Write a great ad
extolling the virtue of your insurance product.

Once a person becomes a customer for that product, use
email to introduce them to the rest of your fine
products as well, or even the business itself.

Using this backdoor approach can often lead to many new
signups even when creating signups was not what you
were promoting. Plus, you'll make a couple of bucks
selling find products!

That might sound radical to some, but follow the logic
and see if you agree.

Let's say you work hard to promote your new-found
venture, and spend a few bucks buying some pay per
click ads. You insert your good old affiliate link as
you've been instructed. And now Paula Prospect sees
your ad and clicks the link.

Whose business are you building now?

The company's business, that's whose.

Sure, you might make A sale. But the company will make
a fortune.

The reason for this is that the company is building
THEIR mailing list off of your efforts.

You might find that to be a good thing. If you do,
that's okay. But remember this. Paula is going to be
interested in other businesses as well. You can count
on that.

And she could just as easily be on your list as well as
the company's.

All you need to do is put up a simple lead capture page
and have Paula fill out your form before going to the
company site. There are no lack of companies who will
do this work for you for a very small fee.

Sales letters are one of the most popular forms of advertising
today, and rightly so. The reason for this is simple: they work.
However, even the most powerful sales letter can't do its job if
you don't get it to the right people.


So, how do you make sure your sales message gets across to those
who will listen? The answer lies in one simple word: EMAIL.
Email is the fastest, most direct, and most cost-effective way to
spread the word. In fact, it's the number one marketing method
in use today.


If you have already established an email newsletter, use your
existing list to send out a sales letter. Since these people
have already signed up to receive your messages, they're likely
not to mind much if you send them a sales pitch; just try not to
make it too hypey or pushy. Thank them for joining your list,
then tell them what you can do, as a service for them.


If you're nervous about turning your prospects off with a sales
letter, simply begin each newsletter issue with a brief ad for
your services. Provide a link back to your site, perhaps to a
page that does contain a strong sales letter.


If you don't already have a newsletter going out, you need to
start one. Let visitors to your site sign up simply, by
providing their email address. Let them know you'll give them
weekly insider tips, useful articles, and money-saving offers.
And ALWAYS, ALWAYS provide, at the end of your newsletter,
specific instructions for how your subscribers can remove
themselves from your list. Although you don't really want people
to unsubscribe, not providing these instructions can really
frustrate people and damage your reputation.


If you don't think it's possible to start your own newsletter,
try buying or renting a targeted list of prospects from an
outside source. A simple Internet search will no-doubt help you
find dozens of companies who specialize in these lists.


In short, email is an incredible marketing tool that can make the
difference between success and failure... if you do it right. A
well-written, well-targeted sales letter or ad can indeed do

Yesterday I was coaching a client who presented me with a
not-very-unique problem. We'd just put the finishing touches on
her website and blog, and were about to embark on promoting her
new workshop series.

"Just one problem," she said. "I have absolutely no one to

Here's my foolproof way to build your list to thousands in a
relatively short time. (But you do have to do these steps ...
like, REALLY, honestly do them ... or it won't work.)

1. Get a kick-ass bonus. There's just no other way to put it.
Your bonus has to be something everybody wants and simply can't
resist. Mine for this newsletter used to be a list of '25 Top
Self Help Literary Agents'. Which worked pretty well, except
that this limited my market to self help authors. Then I changed
it to the more general 'Suzanne's Top 50 Media & Publishing
Contacts' and that works MUCH better. If folks want your bonus,
they'll also get your ezine - because you'll be adding them to
your list.

2. Hold a contest. Last spring I doubled my list and my web
visitors by inviting 12 partners to help me put a $4500
Marketing Makeover contest. They all got lots of exposure, and I
got lots of entries - almost 1500. And you can bet every one of
those entrants got on my ezine list as well. I let them know
that joining was the 'price' of entering the contest. And they
were happy to do so!

3. Announce your contest or other ezine give-away event on
prweb.com or any other press release submission service on the
Web. But be sure to only plant press releases that are truly
newsworthy, and thus likely to get press attention. Even if the
media don't use your words this time, they'll hopefully file you
as an expert for future use.

4. Give away a bonus for other sites to use based on your ezine.
A popular web marketing technique is the special one or two-day
promo that offers big bonus lists when you buy a certain product
on those particular days. So collect some of your best ezine
essays, pack 'em up in a downloadable PDF-based e-book, and
offer it as a bonus these sites can use in their special promos.
Don't forget juicy descriptive copy about your ezine, and a
subscribe link at the end of your e-book. I've gotten hundreds
of new readers this way, and plenty of hits on my sites.

5. Sponsor other people's contests. Give away copies of your
bonus (and ezine) to pertinent groups, contests, and conferences
that request it, regardless of size. (Make sure their target
market matches yours.) Simply run an announcement in your ezine
that you'd be happy to sponsor comparable events. Ask them to
provide a URL for an event description so you know it's legit.
Then offer up your gifts, and ask for a plug for your ezine on
their site and in their materials (i.e. handouts, goodie bags,
etc.) and for them to talk up your dazzling freebie, as well.

6. Give away something totally unique in your content. Who's not
covering something important in your world? (And remember, your
ezine can be really short.) One of my favorites - at
tut.com(Totally Unique Thoughts) - is only a few sentences long.
But it's got GREAT pass-along value, and has a huge list of
40,000 because of it. Think about what info you could offer that
would REALLY motivate folks to forward the email to friends. And
make sure your 'Join Here' info is really prominent in each
email.

7. Brevity is key. As Tut.com proves, brevity is key. Make sure
your ezine doesn't blab on forever but is so pungent, and boiled
down to the essence that in our time-pressed era, anyone can
make time for it.

8. Feature the bonus attached to your ezine in all of your email
signatures. Again and again and again. And be sure to make it
sound tantalizing AND hyperlink it. And while you're at it, load
the graphic of that bonus up high on the typelist (margins) of
your blog with a direct link to sign up.

9. Consider Google Adwords or other pay-per-click search engine
listings. Google's got the biggest, and for many categories,
the most expensive ads but you can't beat the traffic. (There's

"4 WAYS TO INCREASE S.ALES
- Is your marketing just pumping iron?"

At every gym there are the regulars in the w.eight room. These
are the guys and, more and more, the women who work out 5 days a
week, lifting heavier and heavier weights. You may have seen
them. They're 'b.ulked up' and their muscles bulge. Are they as
powerful as they look?

Body builders may look like towers of power but few, if any, can
play a sport. All that pumping iron builds muscle, but only a
few people, such as NFL football players, are able to put to use
more than 25% of the muscle they have. All that muscle looks
impressive, but if all you can do with it is lift weights at the
gym, what good is it?

It's the same with your marketing. You may be spending a lot of
time and m0ney b.ulking up your marketing and advertising or
your website, but is there any correlation between marketing
activity and results?

You could send out 20,000 brochures, spend $15,000 a month on
advertising, or spend $250,000 on a web site, as one client did.
You could b.ulk up your marketing with a lot of effort and big
budgets without improving your marketing results.

You could be pumping iron with your marketing, lots of activity
but not enough s.ales.

Take these five steps to make better use of the marketing muscle
you have, attract new clients and increase your s.ales.

1. Set Goals for Your Business
The first question I ask people who call me about growing their
business is what their goals are. I ask them how much revenue
they want to generate in the next twelve months. Few have a
specific number in mind. They just know that they want to make
more m0ney.

Of course you want to make more. Who doesn't? But in order to
create a marketing plan that will get you where you want to go,
you need a clear idea of your destination. Without a plan,
you're planning to fail.

Set your revenue goals, for the year, the month and the week.
Write these numbers down post them prominently so you see them
every morning. With your destination in mind you can determine
the best way to get there.

2. Set Lead Generation Goals
To achieve your revenue goals you're going to need to attract
prospects, lots of them. Most businesses convert 1% to 10% of
their prospects to clients and customers, even with excellent
salespeople. You'll need to attract 10 to 100 prospects for
every sale you’d like to generate.

Based on your revenue goals, determine your monthly s.ales
targets and, in turn, the number of qualified prospects you need
to attract. That number is your monthly lead generation goal.
Write this number down next to your revenue goals.

3. Create a Lead Generation System
Imagine your prospect is Donald Trump or Meg Whitman, the CEO of
eBay. What's your objective? You want these busy people who have
a lot on their minds to contact you and buy from you.

It doesn't matter what you are selling or to whom you are
selling. To attract prospects, they have to be motivated to
contact you. You need a lead generation system that prompts them
to call you, email you or stop by your showroom.

The lack of a simple and reliable lead generation system is the
number one barrier to growing most small businesses.

4. Avoid Losing Potential S.ales
On average, businesses of all sizes miss 80% of potential s.ales
due to lack of follow-up. Most companies lack the simple
marketing systems they need to capture these s.ales.

Once a prospect contacts you, you need a system for converting
them to clients. And once you've closed the first sale, you need
a system for getting your first-time customers to buy again.

And it doesn't stop there. People who have purchased your
products and services are your best source for new clients.
You also need a system for mining this resource to generate a
flood of referrals.

Don't just "pump iron" with your marketing. Set your goals and
establish marketing systems to generate more business than you
can handle. When you have a reliable system for generating leads
and converting prospects to clients, you'll develop muscle where
you want it, in your bank account.
