FACT: Between 30% and 60% of pay per click search engine
advertising clicks are FALSE.
It's a sobering thought ; especially if you spend 100s, 1000s or
10 of 1000s plus dollars a month online adverting your business.
But there is something you can do about it ; and even profit
from too.
Let's start with the "ugly":
-----------------------------
The first question that must be addressed is where are these
false clicks coming from and why.
Before the days of "pay per click search engine advertising" ; there
was only free search engine listings. You would never have run into
the problems that face advertisers today because there was
no benefits to be had FOR THIRD PARTIES.
In this case the third parties that benefit are both the suppliers
of the traffic and the affiliates of these companies. And yes,
even your competition.
Does that mean all pay per click search engine clicks are false?
Absolutely not.
What it means is that you as the advertiser must choose a company
with fraud protection AND a system to re-imburse you in case
of fraud.
But sadly today ... that is not enough.
You see as a pay per click search engine advertiser myself I am
painfully aware of how much fraud costs. I come from a "day"
before pay per click search engines ; in fact from a day where
there was only 5 search engines in existence.
Yes... I am a "Senior Netizen".
But all kidding aside; this is a serious matter.
In order to win this battle ; protect your investment in paid
advertising and actually use pay per click search engine advertising
one must understand the problem.
In order to do that you must understand how SOME companies
protect you and the short comings of each method of protection.
Here is a small list ways you are protected:
1 - No repeat clicks.
2 - No repeat clicks from the same person in 24 hours.
3 - Certain IP numbers are blocked.
4 - Certain types of clicks THAT ARE NOT clicks are detected.
5 - Internal review of clicks on a keyword or phrase.
For security reasons I will not go into detail on how these
work. Frankly I have paid for that many times over as it stands
now with wasted ad dollars. However as a browser and internet
systems application programmer I have an intimate knowledge
of this subject.
As you can see above "fraud protection" stops basically as
soon as the "click" - if you will - leaves the "pay per click
advertisers website"... and that is the problem.
Most fraud is caused by huge "click farms" that can fool
the advertiser's fraud protection systems. "Click farms" are
run by AFFILIATES of the advertiser group... every click the "farm"
creates puts money in their pocket, and in the pocket
of the pay per click advertising company.
There is a lot more to how "click farms" operate ; but again
I will not publish that information here.
There are also other ways to create "fraudulent" clicks ;
but the gist of the matter is they can all be detected
the same way.
And yes, your competition can click on your ads too... costing
you as low as a penny a click to several dollars a click.
Bottom line... A VERY bad situation for you and me.
Our pockets get hit AND we make no money either - a double
hit on our business enterprises and it's profits.
Before I talk about a solution ; let's address the issue directly.
Are major pay per click engines aware of this problem?
Yes.
Are they doing something about it?
To a point. They need affiliates to supply traffic.
Affiliates want compensation.
Do they re-imburse you in the case of fraud?
Yes. I can attest to this.
Major companies even have "cash reserves" to pay back
advertisers in the case[s] of fraud.
You have to understand that in today's world pay per click
advertising is measured in BILLIONS of dollars. Because
this is such a huge number... it is ripe for explosion and
it is very easy relatively speaking to commit click fraud.
Personally I have DROPPED several pay per click advertising
companies because so many clicks - percentage wise, were
either fraudulent and/or of "little value".
Regardless of what you call it ; it costs you money with
no return on your investment.
Now that the problem is laid out... how does one going
about detecting it and fighting it?
One method is to calculate the return on your investment.
If you invest $50 in clicks in the keyword "software", and you
make $100 in sales ; then you are making $50 and your initial
investment back.
But there is a problem with this logic... consumer buying
patterns are erratic.
You could spend $50 a month on the keyword "software" for
3 months and make no sales... and then on the fourth month
make 2, 3, 5 or more sales... then make 2 the next month and
5 the month after that...
In order to ascertain the "fraudiness" of a keyword or phrase
AND/OR the "value" of it you have to do something different.
To be clear - we are actually going to be doing TWO important
tasks:
One - Determining if the traffic to this keyword is fraudulent.
Two - If it's not, we will be able to determine how much this
keyword is worth in terms of "value".
Let's start with Fraud detection.
As noted above, fraud protection ends with the "click" leaving
the pay per click engine's site and going to your website[s].
Actually determining if the click is fraudulent OR "valuable"
is based on the same information - does the "click" visiting
your website DO ANYTHING - and how long do they "stay" and
so on.
Remember ; once a click is REGISTERED, you are instantly debited.
A fraudulent "clickster" only clicks on links ; "they" do not
visit websites, click on links at a website, buy anything
and do not stay for more than a second or two.
You are right - TRACKING is the key to both fraud protection
AND determining the value of a "click" after a "click" leaves
the pay per click search engines website.
First, lets tackle fraud protection:
--------------------------------------
A "click farm" or "clickster" will generate a lot of fraudulent clicks
on your keyword[s] or phrases. Usually the keywords or phrases will
be very common [lots of clicks normal] and/or high value clicks costing
you a buck or more per click.
In the former, you will receive lots of clicks ; but very few "real"
clicks. In the latter you will receive fewer clicks ; but a lower
percent will be false due to higher click value.
Example:
"Software" is a keyword that gets millions of clicks per month.
Let's say your ranking is #20, and this costs 10 cents per click.
Because the word is so common it is easy for 30/100 clicks to
be fraudulent.
"Website Hosting" is another common phrase, but VERY expensive.
Clicks can cost $2, $5, even $10 per click. Even if only 1/10 clicks
were fraudulent ; it would be enough to cost you a lot AND for the
fraudulent "clickster" to make good money.
We know that fraudulent clicks will not purchase anything, click
on any links at your website[s] [really, there is no point right?],
and not stay longer than a second or two.
Now you know how to detect them.
Second, How to Evaluate the "value of a click"
---------------------------------------------
The value of a click is determined by the cost of the click,
how long they stay, which pages they view and ultimately
if they purchase a product or service.
And of course, if they return later or again and again.
This information IS GOLD. Although this sounds simple, it would
require a whole article to explain this part alone.
[which I will provide in a future newsletter soon]
It should be noted that determining the value of a click
is a universally important task that applies to ALL traffic
that visits your website[s].
Bottom line, fraud protection comes down to tracking the source
of the click, and what the click does at your website[s] and
evaluating this information.
The information you need , depending on the logs your website
hosting provides , will be there to both determine if a click
is fraudulent and the value of each click.
These are called visitor logs, hit logs, referral logs, and
so on.
I know... that is the hard way. There is an easier way coming
soon... watch for details on this.
We use a special in-house system at our website[s] which we will
be making available shortly to the public designed specifically
to stop and report fraud and auto-evaluate the value of a click.
Every click, every visit - in real time.
This system and the data it generates and tracks has been used
to successful prove fraud and get refunds from pay per click
companies. It has also proven invaluable in fine tuning traffic
itself, keywords, and other advertising - reducing ad budgets
and increasing the profit ratio per click received.
How to Fight Click Fraud:
-------------------------
Now that you know what causes it and how to detect it AND prove
it ; you can fight it.
You are armed with knowledge - literally.
If you suspect click fraud on a keyword or phrase you can:
1 - Deactivate that keyword/phrase.
2 - Bring it to your pay per click engines' attention.
3 - Request a refund on clicks on that keyword/phrase.
Here is a real easy way to determine if the clicks from a keyword
or phrase are fraudulent - lower your bid. If you do and get the same
number of clicks - then it is almost GUARANTEED the keyword or
phrase is fraudulent.
Remember... other advertisers also using the same keyword/phrase
will ALSO likely be suffering the same abuse you are... and this
is easily traceable - this tip is leverage, use it.
Another method ; if you notice a sudden UNEXPLAINED jump in
clicks on a particular keyword or phrase with no jump in sales /
results.
So take action and protect yourself and your business today.
Doing so will increase your profits and lower your advertising expenses.

The days of free search engine traffic are over!
(And the reign of cheap search engine traffic has begun!)
Okay, that may not be quite the case *yet*, but you really
do have to work hard (or pay someone to work hard), to even
get close to guaranteeing a top 10 position on search
engines like Google.
Pay-Per-Click search engines, however, offer the promise of
guaranteed visitors, for the keywords of your choice.
Choose to pay per click wisely!
There are literally hundreds of pay-per-click search engines
available for you to spend your money. Only a few can
guarantee targeted visitors to your site, though. I've
listed the best pay-per-click search engines below.
=> SIGN-UP WITH THESE POPULAR PAY-PER-CLICK SEARCH ENGINES
* OVERTURE
Overture (formerly GoTo) is the original (and most popular)
pay-per-click search engine.
Overture is also one of the most expensive, and competitive.
A quotation taken from their sign-up page:
"A $50 initial deposit is non-refundable and will be
applied to click-throughs or to the minimum monthly
spend. Each account has a $20 minimum monthly spend.
There is a minimum bid requirement of $0.10 per click-
through."
Overture do have tough anti-fraud measures in place - always
evolving, obviously - so there is far less chance of
receiving so-called 'bogus clicks' using Overture.
And Overture has an impressive search engine reach, with its
results found in "Sponsored Listings" in many search
engines.
You can currently choose from Fast Track or Self Serve sign-
up options.
Verdict: If you're serious about generating targeted traffic
to your site, but less bothered about minimum (or maximum!)
bid amounts etc. then you should consider signing-up with
Overture.

* ESPOTTING
Espotting is the self-proclaimed #1 pay-per-click search
engine in Europe. Its results appear on many major search
engines as well as well as thousands of relevant smaller
sites too
This is what is says at Espotting UK's sign-up page:
"Espotting Media can help you access targeted leads from
72% of the UK's online population... By ensuring that
your listings appear within our top 3-5 search results,
you will benefit from highly targeted leads from Yahoo!
Europe, Lycos, Kelkoo and Netscape and many more. "
It offers a Gold, Silver and Bronze service depending on how
'hands-on' you want to be with your pay-per-click campaign
(and how much money you want to spend!).
Verdict: A serious contender in Europe, worth considering.
Espotting -

* GOOGLE ADWORDS
Even Google operate a pay-per-click search engine.
Called Google AdWords, results appear on the Google search
engine itself, as part of the search engine listings (right
hand side).
Results also appear as part of AOL and Yahoo!'s searches and
other major content providers. Though this might change
soon.
And, with it's recent launch of Google AdSense, Google
AdWords now appear on minor, but still relevant, content
sites.
Unlike other pay-per-click search engines, Google AdWords
doesn't always list the highest bidded term first (see BID,
BID, BID below for details). In Google's words:
"Getting great results in AdWords doesn't necessarily
mean spending a lot either. The AdWords system rewards
the best-performing ads."
Verdict: Definitely consider signing-up to Google AdWords,
but learn how to make the most of your AdWords campaign
first via a suitable tutorial or learning resource!

considering. All of the pay per click search engines listed
below have considerable reach, and can guarantee visitors to
your site (often at a much cheaper cost than Overture etc.)

Using Overture as an example here, making a bid is simply a
matter of choosing the following:
* keyword
* title
* description
And as Overture recommends on its site, always repeat the
keyword in both the title and description to improve your
chances of a click. Overture also comes with a keyword
suggestion tool, available to Overture advertisers only.
Choosing your keywords, and the amount you are willing to
bid is also simple, but can take a lot of time.
This is because you need to research suitable in-demand
keywords, that cost little. Solutions to this problem
include using the paid-for version of Wordtracker - the
excellent keyword suggestion tool allows you to brainstorm
good keywords, and determine the current cost of the top 20
bids. You might also want to use bid management software.

Make sure you don't spend too much money.
Clicks can add up quickly. It's probably worth investing in
some kind of bid management software, or at least worth
using the in-built bid management provided by search
engines
like Overture.
Remember, you ONLY want your prospective customers to click.
And you must know the value of your visitor! (A rough guide:
Value = average earnings / average unique visitors .)
Try and make sure that the cost of a click never exceeds
this 'value' of a visitor.
One successful strategy is to bid low on many listings.

2005 literally took the world by storm. The tragedies of the
Asian Tsunami, the Hurricanes that blew through the US Gulf
Coast and the earthquakes that swallowed parts of Pakistan
have left an indelible mark on 2005. While mother nature
cast a shadow on 2005, it was technology that delivered the
impact that resulted in a huge outpouring of donations. The
world was touched by the human element seen real-time in
pictures and videos. Today's technology was able to deliver
the graphical grittiness that portrayed the nightmares
occurring half a world away.
Technology is usually thought of as impersonal, but
something needs to be recognized; without technology the
personal elements of the 2005 tragedies would not likely
have been conveyed to the extent and timeliness they were.
Reflecting on 2005 and looking forward to 2006, technology
will undoubtedly continue play a significant role in the
future both on a personal and impersonal level.

Spam reached a whole new level, right along side the ethical
debate of content scraping. Copyrights have been stepped on
and I foresee a new host of tools that will emerge to
protect content.
SPAM and phishing scams were easier to recognize, but to
their credit, spammers showed off their creativity, finding
additional channels to inundate. From splogs to forum spam,
2005 tech users saw spam as one of life's continued
annoyances. Looking into a crystal ball, I fear that social
bookmarking will become the spam vehicle of 2006, weakening
the value of a collective voice.
Sadly the blog saturation has resulted in web clutter. Due
to increased competition and vast quantities of blogs on
free hosted blog networks services, bloggers competing for
audiences and web traffic will result in significant
abandoned content, cluttering the web with useless
ramblings. The ease of blogging that resulted in saturation
will be its downfall. Credibility will again become
important. Journalist, who have suffered from the
blogosphere in 2005, will have a reprieve as credibility
becomes an issue for bloggers. In 2006 web surfers are going
to look for multiple sources to confirm facts, and rely on
reliable respected sources, community content, and
collaboration like Wikipedia is going to suffer and become
less relevant in 2006. While Wikipedia scores well in
search, it does not perform as well with accuracy. The
Wikipedia community is haunted by spam and like DMOZ, it's
success will be its downfall. The relevance of successful
community wiki's will fade in 2006.
Cell phones have become personal homing devices, and it is
near impossible to locate a cellular phone that is not
capable of manipulating or taking photos, videos, graphics
and text messages in addition to the traditional voice
calls. It is likely the PDA will become extinct in 2006, as
travelers move to a single multifunction device. In 2007 MP3
players will likely be a common feature of cell phones.
Wireless growth is still worth noting, as it has moved from
hotspots, to hot zones, to hot cities. Philadelphia and San
Francisco are leading the way as wireless cities in 2006.
What is in store for 2006? Privacy is a hot topic that is
not going to disappear. Google and the US Government are
battling a Big Brother image. Data mining has made the
collection of data meaningful. Anti-Google sentiment is
growing. Google has fallen from grace, while Google has made
friends on Wall Street, it has disappointed surfers who have
turned to Yahoo and MSN in growing numbers. 2006 will likely
result heat up the search engine war with MSN and Yahoo
scrambling for marketshare and Google walking a tightrope
with privacy advocates on one end and monopoly theorists on
the other end.
Google wants to make money, and like it or not data, is a
commodity. Google will likely use the data from their
various ventures to develop new technologies and personalize
content. Conspiracy theorists believe that the Google's
aggregate data will also be used to optimize the fees
charged for pay-per-click, influence organic ranking, or
worse yet, sold.
Google's growth will continue to motivate privacy advocates
and those in the technology field behind the Attention
Truste movement, to work together, to improve how personal
information and subscription information is used online. I
expect we will see a lot of energy and effort in this area.
Personalized content will be a buzz word for 2006. Whether
it is users selecting Podcasts, iTunes, or purchasing Amazon
recommendations the web is learning how to cater content
based on user selections and choices. Web surfers see
personalized content as regaining control of what they want
to watch, see, or listen to. From Tivo to podcasting, users
are taking back control. Yet when the web serves content
that is based on past surfing habits, who is really in
control?
In 2005, marketers were told in no uncertain terms, if they
are not using syndication and RSS, they will not survive.
Well, they have one more chance to get it right. In 2006,
marketers must use RSS as an alternative communication
channel. It will no longer be cutting edge, it will be a
must to survive. Web surfers no longer expect to provide
personal information (an email address) for marketing
materials, they expect to have a choice about how they wish
to receive the content.
Vendors selling through affiliate programs lost ground in
2005. Publishers found the easy money of pay-per-click
advertising not fraught with the inherent problems of
affiliate tracking and cookie-killers. The increase in
click-fraud and content scraping on AdSense sites will even
the playing field and make affiliate programs more
attractive in 2006.
The world is getting smaller, and technological advancements
has not only brought us tragedy, but also has opened doors
and the global market is now a viable option for small
businesses. I believe the globalization trend will continue
in 2006.

"How to Quickly Gain Traffic to Your New Web Site"

The problem with a new site is that it often takes a long
time before it is indexed by the search engines. This means
you are missing out on getting traffic and making sales.
Google places new sites in the "sandbox" which means
they are on "hold" for a period of time before they rank.
Here are some ways to generate immediate traffic to your
web site:
1. Start a PPC (pay per click) campaign – you can begin a
Google Adwords campaign and start generating visitors the
same day you set it up. Of course it is going to cost you
some money but you can set a limit for how much you wish to
spend. You will soon get a good idea what keywords produce
the most clicks for your ads. You can incorporate these
keywords in your site when you optimize it for the search
engines.
While you run your PPC campaign get busy with preparing
your site for the main search engines. Once you have been
indexed by the main ones such as Google, Yahoo and MSN and
start moving up in rankings, you can scale back the amount
you spend on Google Adwords. Your goal is to eventually
rank high enough that you won’t have to use PPC anymore
because you are getting enough visitors.
2. Optimize your site for the search engines – the keywords
that generated the most clicks from your PPC campaign,
should be included in your web pages. Research alternative
keywords using utilities such as Wordtracker or the
Overture Suggestion Tool. You can determine the popularity
of those keywords by seeing how many Google Adword
campaigns are running. You accomplish this by entering the
keyword or keyword phrase in the Google search engine and
see how many ads appear on the right hand side of the page.
If there are a lot, that means the keyword you chose is
very popular and in high demand.
Integrate a few of your best keywords within the text on
each of your web pages. The home page should contain the
keywords which have the highest demand (most searches) with
the least number of competing web sites. Then proceed with
the other pages in descending order of keyword popularity.
Make sure you also include these keywords in your meta
tags, title, h1-h3 tags, links and file names. Don’t overdo
it for you may get penalized for spamming the search
engines.
3. Increase link popularity – this refers to how many
external and internal links are pointing or linking to any
particular page. External links include those that come
from web sites other than your own whereas internal links
are those that come from within the same domain name. Link
popularity is not based on the "quantity" of links but the
"quality" of those links as well. Therefore increasing link
popularity does not necessarily require having a large
number of links pointing to your site but rather a good
number of quality links.
4. Submit to the top search engine directories – many of the
top directories have good link popularity that can be
passed on to your site. They also have specific category
pages that are related to the nature of your site. The
major directories include The Open Directory, Yahoo and
Zeal.
The Open Directory is one of the largest that is still
free, however it can take months or even years to get
listed. If you become an editor for Zeal you can get your
site listed free. Yahoo costs $299.00/year to be included.
It is worth it if you can afford it.

5. Submit to specialty search engine directories – you may
wonder why I haven’t mentioned submitting to the major
search engines. When you work on building the link
popularity of your site, it automatically places you in the
main search engines. Once you have submitted your site to
the main directories, find specialized directories related
to your business. Here’s a good resource:

You can also research the link partners of your
competitors’ sites by entering your favorite keyword in the
search engines. Once you have found a number of top ranked
sites, download the Google toolbar and check their back
links. This can save you a lot of time researching other areas
to find quality links.
Once your site been indexed by the search engines and
included in the directories, focus on adding more content
and continue building your link popularity. This will help
you to maintain and/or increase rankings with the result
of gaining more traffic to your new web site.
